The significance of the project: 

The Niš - Dimitrovgrad railway is the only part of the Corridor X which has not been electrified. It is a connection between Serbia and Bulgaria where large quantities of merchandise from Turkey and the Middle East are transported, rivalling Corridor IV. This Project solves the problem of the Niš junction, which is the second most important junction in the railway transport of Serbia after Belgrade, as an important junction in South Serbia. By constructing a bypass, railway transportation would be moved away from the city centre.

 

Status of the project: 

Component 1 – Reconstruction and preparatory works for electrification of the railway section Sićevo – Staničenje – Dimitrovgrad (80 km)

 

Tender documentation for selection of the Contractor is under preparation.

 

Component 2 - Construction of a single-track bypass railway around the city of Niš for passenger and freight transport (22 km)

 

The Construction Permit Design and tender documentation for selection of the Contractor are in development.

 

Component 3 - Electrification and equipping of the railway with SS and TT devices from Niš to Dimitrovgrad (86 km)

 

The Construction Permit Design and tender documentation for selection of the Contractor are in development.

 

Component 4 - Supervision of works and support to the Project Implementation Unit

 

Tender documentation for selection of the Supervisor of the Project has been prepared and sent to the Bidders from the previously prepared list.

 

Investment value: 

The estimated value of Component 1 is 82.38 million EUR.

The estimated value of Component 2 is 74.2 million EUR.

The estimated value of Component 3 is 93.45 million EUR.

The estimated value of Component 4 is 6 million EUR.

 

Start of the project: 

Component 1 - Commencement of works is expected in Q1 2022.

Component 2 - Commencement of works is expected in Q3 2022.

Component 3 - Commencement of works is expected in Q3 2022.

Component 4 - Commencement of works is expected in Q3 2021.

Completion of the project: 

Component 1 - Completion of works is expected in Q2 2024.

Component 2 - Completion of works is expected in Q3 2024.

Component 3 - Completion of works is expected in Q3 2024.

Component 4– Completion of services is expected in Q1 2025.

 

 

Source of finance: 

The Project is funded by a European Investment Bank loan in the amount of 134 million EUR, and a grant in the amount of 73.04 million EUR obtained by the Western Balkan Investment Framework. The Financial Agreement and Grant Agreements were signed in January 2018. Pursuant to the Financial Agreement, minimum share of funds provided by the Republic of Serbia is 10% of the total value of the Project and, in line with that, an application has been made for an additional grant in the amount of 34.4 million EUR, which will be used for construction of a bypass railway.

Project description: 

Component 1 - The Project includes reconstruction and modernisation of the railway substructure and superstructure, certain station tracks and platforms and railway crossings.

Component 2 - The Project includes civil engineering works for construction of a single-track bypass railway to the north of the city of Niš with the objective of redirecting the traffic from the urban centre.

Component 3 - The Project includes works on modernisation and construction of power lines (contact network) and the electricity supply system, reconstruction and modernisation of signalling and safety and telecommunication installations on the Component 1 and 2.

Component 4 - The Project includes supervision of works and support to the Project Implementation Unit.
